I've been messing around with some left over paint, small canvases/canvas boards and sweet potatoes. I started out by painting a base coat and allowing it to dry before adding more layers of marks.
My intention was to explore the different marks I could achieve whilst using a potato...
For these two, I was mainly using the thin edge of the potato wedge, but I wasn't so keen on the straight, jarring lines it created - they seem somehow violent.
This one turned out especially tempestuous, like waves of an inferno crashing into each other. I achieved this effect by using the flat edge of wedge and making smaller marks that blended the colours together. I think using more white paint helps to elevate the overall impact by creating more contrast...
I created a similar effect with this one but with less blending of colours.
I used a long flat edge to create this effect, with broad swooshing marks. I really liked the blending of the different colours achieved with the gestural marks - it feels very dynamic
I had loads of left over brown paint, since it's a colour I rarely use - so I laid it on this canvas in a really thick layer to see what effect could be achieved, which turned out to be more like a marbling texture. Honestly, it looks a bit like when you are making a chocolate mousse type dessert and mixing the melted chocolate into a glutonous white substance...
As with most of my absract paintings I prefer some of the deatil shots to the whole pieces...
I'm not quite sure where I am going with these "potato painting" explorations, i'm doing it more just for fun at this point - positively channeling the negative troll energy into something constructive and creative.
