Potainting with Different Varieties of Potato

Updated: 1 day ago

This is getting silly now...

Round 1: Baking Potato

I decided to attempt potainting with your standard baking potato next. I hated it.

The potato is so wet it just cloys to the paint - it's impossible to manouevre it deftly because it just cloys to everything. This was the absolute mess of a base layer I created:

Once the base layer was dry I attempted to add some more colourful marks with the baking potato, but really it's just a mess:

Round 2: Salad Potatoes

These ones claimed to be "the Best" but they weren't.

The water content of these potatoes seems to be lower, so they didn't stick to the canvas so much. However, despite picking the biggest ones possible, their size still made it difficult to achieve any effective marks. I managed to make more sludgy mess:

Meanwhile the kitten figured out how to climb up the ladder into the loft...

Rampaging around the one place in the house where I thought it was safe to leave my paintings to dry was not where I wanted the little scamp...

The older cat hasn't figured out how to climb the ladder yet, so she was stuck downstairs on her own staring wistfully at us. At this point I abandoned the potainting and gave the cats some attention.

Round 3: Back to the Sweet Potatoes

Once the base layers had dried, I chopped up some more of the salad potatoes as well as some sweet potato, as a contingency tool for when my frustration would inevitably get the better of me.

This one was made purely with the salad potatoes - an improvement on the baking potato but still inferior to the sweet potato.

I painted the top marks in sweet potato over the salad potato base for this one:

I asked for some title suggestion for this one from my Facebook followers and quite enjoyed the responses - I think 'You Say potato I Say Portraito' was my favourite one.

This one was made exclusively with sweet potato and honestly, I still think this is the superior potato to use. I think i'm going to abandon using different potato varieties and move to potainting on different surfaces instead. I've ordered some potato sacks from Amaon - so I'll try that next.

My Dad's Potainting

My Dad gave me a potainting for Christmas, he's painted the Birmingham road, canal and train network over it in different coloured lines.
