'Betrayal In Your Eyes' music video filmed at the March for Rejoin III in London and the Brexiles exhibition in Cambridge.
Jeff did an amazing job as per ususal, of filming and editing the music video for 'Betrayal In Your Eyes'. I actually wrote and recorded this song in 2020 - it was intended as a "pick me up" song in the wake of Brexit and Covid when the world seemed rather miserable, hence the lyrics; 'If the plants still photosynthesising why do you look so glum? / You don't have to smile for each and every day'. However, it never felt like the right moment to film the music video until recently.
I wrote new songs for the first and second Rejoin marches, which were had more negative a more negative emotional narratives; sadness, disappointment, frustration and anger. But since the change in government this year, I felt like a more jubilant tone would be appropriate - I also didn't have time to write a new song for the third Rejoin march - so it worked out well to use this song even though it's 4 years old.
Although I made a beautiful EU angel costume - we didn't capture so much good footage at the third rejoin march, for a variety of reasons including the low attendance. I also didn't want to make another music video of just a march as this would be rather repetitive - so, when Jeff told me that he was going to come to my Brexiles exhibition open night in Cambridge (he lives nearby in Thetford) - I suggested that we split the music, so the second half featured the exhibition. It turned out to be a really nice way to document the event.
Rather serendipitously, I felt like the lyrics matched the visuals really well - my friend Joel dressed as the "Brexit Devil" for the march, so I asked Jeff to place a clip of him on the line 'You'll be looking back to the devil on your shouder wish you'd given him the sack' whereas the melancholic faces of the Brexiles portraits matched really well with the chorus line 'Hey you with the solitary stare / Tell me are you feeling lonesome over there?'. Jeff also added some close up clips of the portraits eyes for the repeated line 'Betrayal In Your Eyes'. Overall I think it turned out really well, and since this is my favourite song recording I've ever made, I'm really pleased with the outcome.
Oli asked for his portrait to be a 'melancholic blue'.
